Breaking Free from Carnality within the Church: A Spiritual Revival Guide
The contemporary church, like the church of old, is constantly warring between calling and holiness and clamoring for carnal pleasures. In most churches today, “carnality” the preference of fleshly appetites over spiritual realities has crept into the body of believers. Carnality in the church not only leads to complacency but also hinders the power of the Holy Spirit from moving freely within the congregation. In this post, we’ll explore how the church can break free from carnality and experience a true “spiritual revival.”
Understanding Carnality in the Church
Carnality is an attitude or lifestyle characterized by fleshly desires materialism, selfish goals, and sin. While it is understandable to yearn for comfort, success, and happiness, the risk comes in letting such desires take over from the call of spirituality towards holiness and righteousness. In most contemporary churches, carnality comes in diverse manifestations, ranging from compromising on worldly values to placing wealth and entertainment above striving for godliness.
When carnality settles in, Christians will be present at church, involved in ministry functions, and say they know Christ, but nothing changes in their lives. Their hearts are not conformed to God’s will, and their priorities are skewed. They are obsessed with living out the kingdom of God principles instead of pursuing temporary, momentary gratifications that divert their attention from the eternal plan God has for them.
The Call for Spiritual Revival
A spiritual revival is what the church so badly requires today. Revival is not an emotional moment or a chain of powerful gatherings it is true repentance from the heart towards God, and believers reaffirming their vow to holiness and a renewed relationship with Christ. It is the renewal of God’s presence in the church and a refiring of spiritual passion in believers’ hearts.
Revival begins with recognizing the need for spiritual renewal. For as 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Repentance is the first step toward revival shunning the carnal forces that have gained a foothold in the church and returning to the righteousness that is pleasing to Christ.
Overcoming Complacency
“Complacency” is perhaps the greatest hindrance to spiritual renewal. It’s simple for believers to become complacent in their habits and lukewarm toward the call to sanctity. The world is full of distractions, and without a strong devotion to pursuing God’s presence, believers can easily lose their passion.
In order to overcome complacency, the church needs to rekindle its passion for prayer, worship, and God’s Word. Daily prayer meetings and Bible study can enhance the believer’s bond with God, while worship redirects hearts towards His greatness. The church needs to remind its congregation that they were not called to fit in with society, but to stand out as living stones of Christ’s love, truth, and holiness.
Pursuing Holiness
Holiness is the key to breaking free from carnality. The Bible clearly calls believers to live holy lives, not in their own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit. 1 Peter 1:16 reminds us, “Be holy, because I am holy.” Holiness is not about outward appearances or self-righteousness; it’s about a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit, desiring to live in obedience to God’s commands.
The church must preach holiness as a central message, not just as a list of do’s and don’ts, but as the fruit of a life surrendered to God. As believers grow in their relationship with God, they begin to reflect His character and embrace His standards of purity, integrity, and love.
Conclusion
Shaking off carnality in the church is not something that can be done overnight, but it starts with an openness to accept “Spiritual Revival.” When the church is determined to move beyond complacency and seek after “Holiness,” it will know the life-changing power of God’s presence. The invitation to holiness is not a choice but an imperative, and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can be delivered from sin and come to experience the spiritual revival that the church so deeply needs. The day of genuine rebirth is here let us turn to the face of God and get ready for a new infusing of His Spirit.
